The Invisible Man Essay Paper Griffin Wells goes in great detail about the way Griffin (the Invisible Man) looks and acts. He writes about Griffins bad temper and his evil scheme of stealing money and food to survive as an invisible man. He makes the character, Griffin, realistic because his emotions, like expressing his anger through shouting, are something people are familiar with. Griffin was quick to anger by the taking of drugs and stimulants. What may have begun as quick temper and impatience turns into violent rage and a wish to commit murder. Griffins deterioration is self-induced for the most part, but his alienation from his own kind is assisted by other human beings. Fear and superstition follow him, and it seems a defensive mechanism of humans to lash out and destroy the things they fear and do not understand. Griffin had been a brilliant young chemist and researcher, confined and unappreciated as an instructor in a small English college. His brilliance had led him to investigations in physics and th e properties of light. It is interesting to observe that as his passion for experimentation and his devotion to pure scientific investigations accelerated. When he required money to advance his experiments in invisibility, he stole it from his father. He finds the possibility to make something invisible. He trys it with a cat and it works. So then he made himself invisible. As an invisible man he could steal, as much he wanted. He is chased by dogs, hunted down in a department store, nearly run over in the streets, and constantly subjected to the discomfort of exposure and he gets lots of head colds. He is a man caught in a trap of his own making. Then, of course, he is betrayed by the only person in whom he placed confidence. Griffins end is tragic, but it is the culmination of the tragic course he had followed since he first ventured into the unknown terrors of invisibility. At this point Griffin is a potential murderer, and the trust and confidence he places in Kemp only make that doctors betrayal of that faith all the more difficult to accomplish in good conscience. The reason they were so afraid of the invisible man was the fact that nobody could explain why he was invisible. I believe that if the people would have been more open minded about his invisibility that the man might not have become crazy and killed in the end. Society cannot deal with things that cannot be explained. There was skepticism even after the man vanished and there were witnesses to it. The ignorance of the society also played an important role in assisting the invisible to become mad. Since the invisible man was somewhat of a freak of nature or science the people just wanted him to be gone. They did not want an explanation. They wanted the invisible man dead. After the people chased the invisible man out of the town he snapped and became totally crazy. This is when Griffin was going to go on his reign of terror and start killing judicially. The Invisible Man can get almost any object he desires but he cannot enjoy them. He also has the problem of always getting run into and trampled upon since he cannot be seen. The novel also showed me what a man who has been an outcast all his life and who was partly responsible for the death of his father is capable of doing and thinking. Those bad times probably were the cause of his insanity, which led into his desire to become invisible and cause terror. The part in the book that most impressed me is where the invisible man himself is hunted. All the aspects of the book are successful. I would advise others to read the book, because they would have an amusing time.

Arctic Wolf or Canis lupus arctos The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos) is a subspecies of the grey wolf that inhabits the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. Arctic wolves are also known as polar wolves or white wolves. Appearance Arctic wolves are similar in build to other grey wolf subspecies. They are slightly smaller in size than other grey wolf subspecies and have smaller ears and a shorter nose. The most prominent difference between arctic wolves and other grey wolf subspecies is their all-white coat, which remains white throughout the year. Arctic wolves have a coat of fur that is specially adapted to the extreme cold climate in which they live. Their fur consists of an outer layer of fur that grows thick when the winter months arrive and an inner layer of fur that forms a waterproof barrier close to the skin. Adult Arctic wolves weigh between 75 and 125 pounds. They grow to lengths of between 3 and 6 feet. Arctic wolves have sharp teeth and powerful jaws, characteristics fitting for a carnivore. Arctic wolves can eat large quantities of meat which enables them to survive for the sometimes long periods between prey captures. Climate and Ecosystem Arctic wolves have not been subjected to the intense hunting and persecution that other grey wolf subspecies have. This is due to the fact that arctic wolves inhabit regions that are largely unpopulated by humans. The greatest threat to Arctic wolves is climate change. Climate change has caused a cascade of effects throughout Arctic ecosystems. Climate variations and extremes have altered the composition of Arctic vegetation which has, in turn, had a negative impact on populations of herbivores in the Arctic. This, in turn, has affected populations of Arctic wolf who rely on herbivores for prey. The diet of Arctic wolves consists primarily of muskox, Arctic hares, and caribou. Arctic wolves form packs that can consist of just a few individuals to as many as 20 wolves. The size of the pack varies based on the availability of food. Arctic wolves are territorial but their territories are often large and overlap with the territories of other individuals. They mark their territory with urine. Arctic wolf populations are present in Alaska, Greenland, and Canada. Their greatest population density is in Alaska, with smaller, sparser populations in Greenland and Canada. Arctic wolves are thought to have evolved from a lineage of other canids about 50 million years ago. Scientists believe that Arctic wolves were isolated in very cold habitats during the Ice Age. It was during this time that they developed the adaptations necessary to survive in the extreme cold of the Arctic. The Good Corn The Good Corn is a complexly written short story, although it only involves three prominent characters. Elsie, who is one of the least prominent characters in text is referenced in the story throughout, as the girl or only Elsie. I have chosen Elsie as a character to contrast my views about because the text encourages the readers to have a less sympathetic response and approach to her but I seemed to have had a very compassionate and sensitive approach to Elsie and think that because the author hasn’t gone much into detail, in the narration, about her feelings, we are shrouded and made to loathe her character given the third person omniscient point of view. In the author’s context, the book was written in the 1950’s and is so forth, an outcome of white, male middle-class ideas about masculinity and femininity where males were the dominant species and the females were always referred to as the inferior race in general. Also ethnicity and culture played a great part in those times because most non – white people were considered to be greatly inferior and made to do degrading jobs like maids or servants. This is the context in which we are made to view Elsie. She is portrayed as an uneducated and is described as being short and dark, with a thick bright complexion. In the reader’s context being short or dark doesn’t mean much to us because, in this 21st century, multiculturalism is a big factor and even white people could look noticeably dark maybe because of a tan. Also having a servant or helper is now, not considered as much of a degrading job as before since and extensively large amount of servants lead equally sufficient and satisfied lives as any normal middle-class working person. Also, a significantly large amount of these servants are actually of the white population. Also, Elsie is represented as an uncaring, emotionless, un-maternal, morally irresponsible and a calculative and selfish person. The refusal of access into her thoughts and feelings coax the reader to see her as a just a body who is only alive for bodily pleasures rather than being an individual human being with personal suffering, guilt or self-conscience. This has once again occurred because of superiority issues where the narrator has chosen to be omniscient and has rejected Elsie’s thoughts and feelings. In the reader’s context, Elsie would be seen as a sexually promiscuous person as the text wants us to see her but we would also have questioned the reasons behind her being eighteen and so free with her body that she could bear two children in

Languages define a culture itself and every language in the world expresses the heart and spirit of people who speak it. Languages explain the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication. Everyone has a language that they convey and pursue in everyday activities. Gloria Anzaldua, author of â€Å"How to Tame a Wild Tongue†, is a Mexican American woman who takes great pride in her culture, but struggles to keep the form of Spanish called, â€Å"Chicano Spanish† alive. Born and raised in South Texas, Anzaldua will always have Mexican culture in her blood, but living in such a strict American society, she feels pressured to choose to speak either an English that American society would appreciate, or Castilian that the Mexican society would agree with. Growing up, Anzaldua slowly realized that others mistreated her because her language was poor. She expresses herself in the text through her personal experiences, struggles, and her gender role with in her language and culture. Everyone has a specific role that they associate with when it comes to speaking different languages. Anzaldua describes this by saying, â€Å"My ‘home’ tongues are the languages I speak with my sister and brothers, with my friends† (â€Å"Tongue† 36). With Chicano Spanish and Tex-Mex as some of the most dependent languages for her, she also speaks a total of five different languages that she picked up from school, reading literature, and different cultures. She feels most confident when she speaks in her native tongue, without the distraction of adjusting to another language. She knows how to speak many languages, but is always having to speak differently according to different cultures. As time went on, the Chicano language grew rapidly, and now includes elements from seven different languages, such as Standard English, Working class and slang English, Standard Spanish, Standard Mexican Spanish, North Mexican Spanish dialect, Chicano Spanish, and Tex-Mex. Eventually, the Chicanos started to believe they needed a language that could be identified as their own. According to Anzaldua, Chicanos are â€Å"complex, heterogeneous  people,† and because of that, they speak many different languages (â€Å"Tongue†, 36). Is the way we speak always how others you want to interpret it? Growing up, Chicanos believed they spoke poor Spanish. They would feel uncomfortable talking to others because mainstream American culture discouraged the use of their language. She describes the discrimination, â€Å"It is illegitimate, a bastard language. And because we internalize how our language has been used against us by dominant culture, we use our language differences against each other† (â€Å"Tongue†, 38). Therefore, Chicanos felt obligated to use their own dominant language because they were proud of their culture. In this way, Anzaldua takes pride in herself and the language she speaks. She expresses this pride by saying, â€Å"So, if you want to really hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin to linguistic identity- I am my language† (â€Å"Tongue†, 39). Anzaldua believes that even if you live in a country where the language you speak is not accepted, still continue to use your native tongue because it defines who you are as a person. â€Å"I will no longer be made to feel ashamed of existing. I will have my voice: Indian, Spanish, white. I will have my serpent’s tongue- my woman’s voice, my sexual voice, my poet’s voice. I will overcome the tradition of silence† (â€Å"Tongue† 40). Aristotle classifies language by the use of persuasive arguments and using the three different types of persuasive appeals (pathos, logos, and ethos) (Aristotle 489). Whereas Anzaldua believes there are no right or wrong way to use language. Aristotle view of language is more persuasion whereas Anzaldua’s view is more social and applies more to modern day speaking. Many have the difficulties of speaking certain languages, but imagine those not being able to speak words because of the inability to even hear the words being spoken. This is why her view is more relevant to people today. Anzaldua expresses herself throughout her life of having a challenging time speaking her language; similarly, I Jordan Kohl, believe that language is a special device that s hould not be taken for granted. As someone who has sensorineural hearing loss, I know that language can have many complications. If you cannot hear, you cannot speak. Pronouncing words or phrases beginning with certain letters such as a, ‘’S†, â€Å"W†, and â€Å"T†, has taken numerous years for me to conquer. Anzaldua’s way of learning new languages was through listening at school, radio, TV, and reading newspapers  and magazines; mine was through reading lips, speech therapy, wearing hearing aids, and various hearing tests. While Anzaldua’s experiences may have had a struggle to maintain a positive outlook on her language conflicts, mine was to keep track of listening to other people’s words. Aristotle’s view of persuasive arguments obviously does not apply to my life as much as her does. How we communicate with each other is the way we connect. Anzaldua illustrates that the language we speak should not isolate people from each other. Be proud of the language you speak, even if others do not agree. I myself believe that any language should be honored because some cannot even hear the words. Anzaldua’s perspective has helped people have a better understanding of the importance being appreciative of languages. Language cannot be separated from culture as an independent aspect because any language is a culture itself. What’s your assessment of the company’s work environment? (20 points) Maslow’s hierarchy consists of five basic needs, self-actualization, esteem, social, safety, and physiological. Patagonia culture meets many standards promising that their products are produced under safe, fair, legal, and humane working conditions throughout the supply chain (Patagonia, 2014). Patagonia offers all of the needs of Maslow’s theory, making employees comfortable at their job; This Company cares about their employees offering childcare, organic meals, recreational activities, and more. Working at Patagonia would be a great place, where the company encourages celebrations and activities to boost the employee’s moral. Patagonia is known for having loyal employees b ecause of how the managers treat them having communication deadlines, expectations, and including employees in figuring out the best way to meet needs. I believe that this work environment is successful because of how it is managed and the way the employees are treated. 2. Use the expectancy theory and/or the equity theory of motivation to explain how feeling underpaid might affect the work of a Patagonia associate and what a manager can do to increase the employee’s motivation. (20 points) Expectancy theory states that a person’s behavior is influenced by the expected outcomes. In this case, low pay would lead the person to feel like no matter what they did, their efforts would not be rewarded with expected pay raises or bonuses. The employees that are underpaid often just show up and do what they have to do, nothing more because they feel their efforts are not appreciated or in some cases known. To increase motivation, acknowledging a job well done, special efforts, or anything the employee tries and does should be part of the routine. Also, making pay comparable to work, offering bonuses or rewards would also help motivation. 3. What do you think might be Patagonia’s biggest challenge in keeping employees motivated? If you were managing a team of Patagonia employees in the retail stores, how would you keep them motivated? (20 points) I believe Patagonia’s biggest challenge in keeping employees motivated is the pay. Pay is one of the biggest motiv ations for employees especially a competitive pay. Employees need to be acknowledged and feel like they are a part of a team. If I were managing Patagonia, IÂ  would have quarterly bonuses for employees that exceed expectations, coming to work on time, going above and beyond for the business. I would also do an employee of the month, with rewards that could help motivate my employees. It is important to keep your employees engaged and informed when running a business. Parents and parents to be who are undecided about whether spanking is an acceptable form of discipline should first get educated on what spanking is. A good first step would be learning the meaning of spanking. Equally as important is, knowing what is considered a spanking, as well as, when spanking becomes abuse. In addition, knowing the ways spanking may benefit children would help solidify spanking as the best option for discipline. Spanking as defined by oxford dictionary is, the act of slapping especially on the uttocks as punishment for children. Taking into consideration that no two children are the same the recommended ages for spanking are between 3years of age up to the mid-teens. Any type of physical discipline like spanking before age three is discouraged, children younger than age three cannot communicate well enough to know right from wrong. In contrast, it is understood that teen agers know right from wrong so, parents may benefit from professional help if behavioral issues continue into the late teen years. In summary, spanking is the use of an open hand to slap the lothed buttocks of a child between the ages of 3 and 15. Spanking for disciplinary reasons is done with an open hand, the use of a foreign object could easily be seen as abuse. For example, the use ofa paddle may result in bruising or muscle damage. In fact, any action which may have permanent effects such as, punching, shaking, striking the face, or even pulling the ear would be considered abuse not discipline. Also, in contrast to abuse, the time spent in the act will be minimal, usually lasting only seconds. To summarize, a properly administered panking, should only be done with an open hand, result in mild discomfort, slight redness to the area and should be only seconds in duration. The benefits of spanking are many and of great value. First, as a result of this type discipline being of such short duration, the family can spend more time together. Second, is the enhanced ability to identify and respect authority, a trait that could be useful in the workplace. Third, consider that learning how to accept responsibility and the consequences of actions may lead to better planning abilities. Furthermore, a panking could save a childs life.
